abstract = "The state of Acre, which represents 3,9% of the Brazilian Amazon,
has changed its land use due to the rapid conversion of forest
into cattle pasture. The Novo Ideal community, which is located in
the Pedro Peixoto colonization project, has 40% of cleared land,
of which 50% is already in use by pasture. The deforestation
average rate is about 2,0% annually, which means that more than a
half of the total forest area will disappear if this land use
practice continues to the next 10 years. Thus, if the
deforestation continues annually at this rate an inversion of this
percentage will occur where 40% will be forest area and 60% open
area. This scenario is contrary to the Brazilian forest
regulations law, which establishes a limit of 20% to open areas
                         and 80% forest.",
